Swami's Quotes on Education The Five Principles of Education
"For students and other members of society, education should be a kind of social ideal. It should constitute a BRIDGE on which you should walk to reach your goal. If this BRIDGE of education is not built with sufficient strength, it will be harmful to the individual. The students should take the road of reorganization and endow education with the strength it needs...Today's education is aimed at giving those who go through it an amount of temporary happiness, temporary beauty and temporary pleasure...Principles of education that do not connect the students with their parents will bring unhappiness to all of us in the future...If in your future, you aspire to, and want, some happiness, pleasure and peace, you must practice certain principles at the present time. You must practice these principles now to bring peace and contentment for yourself in the later stages of your life" - Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Sathya Sai Baba emphasizes that Education should be for life, not just for a living. He says that, "Education should serve not only to develop one's intelligence and skills, but also help broaden one's outlook and make a person useful to society and the world at large. This is possible only when cultivation of the spirit is promoted along with education in the physical sciences. Moral and spiritual education will train a person to lead a disciplined life. Education without self-control is no education at all. True education should make a person compassionate and humane. It should not make him self-centered and narrow-minded." He points out that "Science without humanity and commerce without morality are both useless and dangerous."

Baba constantly reminds us that it is the children of today who will be the ones to shape tomorrow's world. If we want our world to be a better, safer and a more ecologically viable place in which to live, then we need to develop in our children a sense of social responsibility and a strong spiritual awareness.

As a means for bringing about this much needed change in outlook, Baba has instigated a system of Values Education called EDUCATION IN HUMAN VALUES and SAI SPIRITUAL EDUCATION (BALVIKAS) which provides a much-need corrective to the current educational trends. These programs are designed to assist parents and educators in developing young people into citizens of faith and high moral character. For, as He says, "Present day education develops intellect and skills but does little to develop good qualities", and asks, "of what avail is all the knowledge in the world if one has not got a good character?"

It is the Educational Wings of the various Sai Centers throughout the world that have the responsibility of putting these programs into effect. This education program sets forth a plan of education designed to help children learn and practice the basic values that are essential to civilization. Learn more

Spiritual education is not a separate and distinct discipline. It is part and parcel of all types and levels of education. - Sri Sathya Sai Baba
